OUR PHILOSOPHY
The Zambian University of Business Technology and Education School (ZUBTES), now T/A Zambian University College of Business Technology and Education is an institution of higher learning, offering Tertiary education to all people from all walks of life, more especially vulnerable and the underprivileged in society is a Social Investment Enterprise established and incorporated in Zambia with the object of providing university education service delivery to benefit Zambians and other nationals considered vulnerable and who cannot afford the cost of education. The concept of Social Investment Enterprises though a new phenomenon in modern business environment, has been proven to be an effective tool that fights poverty and better people’s lives more especially in developing countries. We share almost the same aspirations with many institutions across the world including UNESCO club that believes in fighting poverty through education empowerment.
Being the, “new kind of Capitalism that serves humanity’s most pressing needs,” it must be exploited, pursued and conquered by everyone at whatever cost.
Therefore, ZUBTES’ ideals as a social business entity aim to help society and its people to realize their dreams in acquiring university education without discrimination due to differentials in the cost of education and differences in human attributes such as color, religion, race, age, ethnicity, etc . For instance, Yunus (2010) observed that, “the social business is a business because it must be self-sustaining-that is, it should generate enough income to cover its own costs.” Our belief is that part of the economic surplus the social business creates is invested in expanding the business; a part is kept in reserve to cover uncertainties and not to increase owners’ wealth.
Hence, the Zambian University of Business Technology and Education School (ZUBTES) endeavor stands in between the gap to provide quality and affordable education services to many people who cannot afford high education fees from some private and public institutions whose cost of tertiary education is beyond reach. What drives ZUBTES is our belief and slogan of, “Breaking the Barriers of Knowledge, Skills and Innovations through Quality Education Inclusion.”
The promoters of ZUBTES are abrogating the olds by challenging the commercial enterprises’ corporate objective of value creation and believes that it should not just be about “creating value for the owners via payment of huge dividends through and over time, but creating value in others who later on contribute to the country’s economic development,” observed Dr. Chiwele (2012) in his essay entitled: Building social businesses.
It is also important to note that rational people more especially investors, “who know but do not know” would always think about this initiative as a myth and far from reality. But wait a minute, who says this is not possible? We have the capacity and wisdom to achieve this and we have achieved this before through yet another social business model established in 2009 in education service delivery in one of the peri-urban areas of Lusaka. A testimony that has successfully benefited over 1,000 pupils progressively schooled from pre-grades, primary through to secondary school and most of our former pupils are now studying in various colleges and universities at fees they are struggling to pay.
Thus, ZUBTES is a replica of this philosophy which should be supported by all well meaning Zambians and other nationals for the benefit of our underprivileged masses in our country, the continent and the whole world at large.
In Unison lets all make a declaration that, “University education is not for the elite and the rich alone but all humanity, “come one, come all…….” And become part of this innovation to realize our dreams.
